CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH

Research activities in English learning cover four step: Observing, Describing, Analyzing, Explaining
CAR has aim to developing a certain instructional strategy to solve the practical instructional problems in English classrooms.
It will help the students make appropriate style and strategy of learning.
CAR is done in several cycles, and then each cycle begins with
1.      Find the Problems
The problems should be clear.
What CAR analyzes ex: the media to improve the effectiveness, teaching activities, students motivation
CAR concerns on the teacher success in their own instructions such as the students learning progress, students’ behavior, student’ learning problems, learning environment and so forth.
2.      Lesson Planning (teaching scenario)
Planning refers to the proposed instructional strategy to be developed in the research to solve instructional problems
The teacher should be design the activity (what the student should do) and the criteria of success.
Planning is the strategy became the focus on the study, to be prepared, to be tried out, to be revised, to be tried again until it proves effective to solve the problems.
3.      Implementing the Plan,
Implementation of the strategy that has been planned, (usually) without collaborator.
How to practice the teaching scenario ex: individual or group
Very detail (sequence, time, tool, material)
They should have responsible based on their teaching scenario (ex: the teacher should make the students achievement more)
4.      Observing the implementation,
Observing is collecting the data base on own research (what kind of strategy, media or motivation that used)
Assessing the criteria of success is implemented the strategy in solving the instructional problems.
The data are indicating success and other instructional problems are recorded
5.      Reflecting or evaluating the process and the result of the implementation
a.       Recorded data analyzed to judge how much the implemented strategy has effectively solve the problems.
b.      What is the target?
c.       The data that had been collect compare with the target or criteria of success (example: a strategy of improving (1) the student’ writing skill using picture series is considered successful if the students enjoy learning writing using picture series, (2) the teacher feels convenient in using the strategy of picture series …….)
d.      Target reasonable (based on the students’ IQ) higher 90, medium 75, lower less than 50, and it is cannot predicted.
If the higher target 80, the students score more than 80
If the lower target 50, the students score should be minimum at 50
The data of CAR
  1. The data may come from numerical information (the result of test as well as verbal information such as student’s problems, classroom atmosphere, students’ motivation…)
  2. Because of type of data from CAR quantitative and qualitative, it is not necessary to claim CAR quantitative or qualitative.
  3. The data record during the process of observation (how well the strategy can solve the problem NOT, how well the teacher implements the strategy or how well the strategy is implemented)
The target of goal CAR
  1. The classroom problems to be solve
  2. The target or criteria of success to be achieve
  3. The data indicating the achievement of the target
  4. The sources data
  5. The instrument to collect data
  6. The data collection techniques
The results are innovations in English instructions strategy that can enhance the success in students’ learning English.
1.      Give the result
Find the strategy based on the target (give the prove or evidence).
If no success, used the second cycle (and make implementing again because the cycle cannot be predicted)
2.      Product
Then goal to find the strategy to reach the target
The target should be making in two types: the higher ….. and the lower ….
